2004 Clendenen Family Vineyards Pinot Noir
Description: This wine comes from the organically certified Le Bon Climat vineyard, planted in 1998. It is entirely from a central, elevated mesa, planted to the Dijon clone 667. It was difficult to make elegant, classic pinot noir in the hellaciously hot year of ’04, but the CFV pinot was harvested at 13% potential alcohol on September 5th, just prior to the heat spell. Wine style was a more complicated matter. This pinot was 2 years in barrel, 100% new, heavily toasted François Freres, and bottled unfiltered. The wine is rich and powerful, from low yields (2 tons per acre, 1500 vines per acre) and natural concentration. It is firmly in the red fruit spectrum, with earth, sous bois, and exciting hard spice complexity. This is a stylish, traditional pinot destined to appeal to all lovers of Cru Burgundy who are perplexed by purple, gassy pinot, bottled too early, sold to early, and quite undrinkable.
