2008 Nebbiolo "Punta Exclamitiva"
Bien Nacido Vineyard is truly magic. This cool climate vineyard has such a long growing season that even late ripening varieties such as Nebbiolo, Petit Verdot and Refosco ripen to full flavor. Long cool ripening means more intensity and varietally correct aromas and flavors. We like Nebbiolo to taste like Nebbiolo. Our two acres of Nebbiolo are planted on a windswept hillside with an amazing view of the entire Santa Maria Valley. The planting faces southwest, which gives this block maximum sun exposure to help these slow ripening grapes to mature.
The original winemaking laws for making Nebbiolo in the Barolo region in Italy mandates barrel aging for a minimum of three years. This requirement was put in place to force Barolo producers to release wines ready to drink. Young Nebbiolo is high in acid and is tannic. Both the elevated acid and tannins levels can be integrated into with wine with barrel aging. This Nebbiolo is aged in barrel for 5 years. The result of all this barrel aging is a beautifully developed, sophisticated wine.

"This nearly decade-old wine is ready to enjoy now, with complex aromas of iron, turned earthy, leather, dried red cherry, cinnamon, wet cedar, mace and myrrh. It's relatively light in body and the flavors are mineral-driven, with dust and rust set against dried cranberry and cherry fruits."
