Many of you know the story. Jim likes to make elegant, high-acid, long-lived chardonnay, but many critics prefer heavy, obvious, in-your-face styles of wine. So Jim creates “Nuits-Blanches” Chardonnay to show that he can be as shameless and shameful as anyone. The market loves it, but Jim and many of his regular customers don’t. Jim agonizes, his customers are unaware, and his critics could care less. Jim concludes that he can’t make a style of wine that he doesn’t believe in, but probably shouldn’t completely vinify counter to market trends. He chooses compromise. A more open style, from lower-yielding vineyard sections, complex but balanced, no exaggeration but less restraint and discretion. Something that is youthful, powerful, multi-dimensional, but that is structured to gain complexity through bottle development. Jim has more than 20 years of Chardonnay making experience with wines at 17 years of age showing extraordinary depth, complexity, texture and evolution. He employs that experience in an excellent vintage at Bien Nacido Vineyard to create a wine to celebrate his XXth Anniversary. Mr. Bouge meet Mr. Nuits-Blanches. Fully ripened grapes (but not overly so) 100% new oak (not 200%), 20 months in barrel, unfiltered. You get the picture. This is the synthesis of the opposing ideas of Chardonnay creation bedeviling Jim Clendenen; sorted out in the most appealing, delicious, complete and satisfying way he can imagine it.
