Black By Black Wines
These Bordeaux blends were specially made for noted wine collector Tom Black. In the late 90s, Jim Clendenen had custom vinified wines from Bordeaux varieties in Santa Barbara County. Upon tasting them, Tom decided that he wanted to start a small winery with Jim to make classic Cab based wines, for the sole purpose of charitable donation. Our first bottling was 2001, one third each Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. In Nashville it was put into a blind tasting with a bunch of much more famous Cabs, and the wine won the tasting flat out. Tom was really happy; he doesn't quite grasp second place. That tasting cemented their deal, and charities all over the country have reaped the benefit. Drue Kataoka, designed the striking and symbolic label. Drue is a very famous Sumi-e artist using the single brush stroke calligraphy frame work to summon nature, strength, solidarity, and solitude.
