55% Pinot Gris, 40% Pinot Blanc and 5% Aligote.
Once again with emphasis. This wine is not a marketing gimmick, a one note song, or a one hit wonder. It is the product of an estate vineyard planted in 1994, after extensive trips to Burgundy over a 20 year period, and a long-time infatuation with the Burgundian clone of Pinot Gris, called there Pinot Beurrot. It is here to stay. Hildegard is Jim Clendenen’s favorite white wine project, and his most complete white wine style.
Each vintage has been rich, complex, delicious, and unique. The 2001, like the vintage in general, is the best Hildegard that we’ve made. It is far easier to make a complete wine with young vineyards by blending compatible grape varieties.
In the case of Hildegard, we get texture and length from the Pinot Gris, richness and mid-palate from the Pinot Blanc, and finishing acidity & minerality from the homeopathic inclusion of Aligote’. The ’01 Hildegard possesses aromas of violet, marzipan, coconut, lavender, truffle, and licorice. Its flavor profile follows suit exactly with excellent integration. As the vineyards mature, Hildegard becomes more nuanced and distinctive.
