2009 Pinot Noir Talley Hist Vineyard

Historic Vineyards Collection

Brian Talley and Jim Clendenen selected a discreet 1.2-acre block that contains some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines on the Talley property as the ABC section. The resulting wine shows a beautiful plum, cherry and spice character in well structured frame.

As the 2009 Harvest approached, it became obvious that the grape yield was going to above average.  It was going to be a good crop and the quality looked really good, too. Au Bon Climat happily signed on for a few more tons of Pinot Noir from the Talley Vineyards. Au Bon Climat has been lucky enough to buy a few tons of Talley Pinot Noir since 1991. 2009 was a rare year with a good Pinot Noir fruit set all along the Central Coast.  Not only was there a good set in 2009, but it was extraordinary at Talley Vineyards. The clusters ripened in balance. The stems lignified as the grapes ripened. Lignification is the process of the green grape stems turning woody. The chlorophyll in green stems gives wine a bitter flavor so they are not used. In exceptional years, the grapes ripen as the stem lignify. The resulting wine has a stem component which is hard to describe but suffice to say adds a flavorful complexity.
