2013 Le Du's Pinot Noir
Jean Luc Le Du was a legend in the New York wine scene from 1995 until his untimely passing in December of 2017. His interest in wine led him to Restaurant Daniel in New York. In just a few years he was head sommelier. He was fun, opinionated and French. Jim Clendenen bonded with Jean Luc since Jim was also fun and opinionated and wanted to be French. Jean Luc left Restaurant Daniel and opened Le Du Wines in 2005. This store was full of wines that Jean Luc carefully selected. Au Bon Climat was honored to be chosen to make the private label wine for Jean Luc. We made the first wine for Le Du wines in 2005 and continued until 2013.
This blend is 100% Pinot Noir with 75% from Bien Nacido Vineyard and 25% Le Bon Climat Vineyard which is entirely estate farmed grapes. The Bien Nacido is a mix of these clones: Jackson, 103, 115, 2A, 113 and 667; the Le Bon Climat portion is a small amount of Mt. Eden clone and a majority 2A.
The 2013 Le Du is a classic Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir. It is a wine of great aromatics and character showing cherry/cranberry fruit, rose petal, earth and spice. The key word is balance. A balance of oak and fruit, a balance of tannin and acid, and a balance elegance and intensity. This delicious Pinot Noir does not compete with food but maximizes the dining experience by complimenting whatever it is paired with.
