2005 Chardonnay 25th XXV Anniversary
Many of you know the story. Jim likes to make elegant, high-acid, long-lived chardonnay, but many critics prefer a heavy, obvious, in-your-face styles of wine. So in 1996, Jim created “Nuits-Blanches” Chardonnay to show that he can be as shameless and as shameful as anyone.
Then with the 2000 vintage Jim choose compromise with this wine. The XXth Anniversary Chardonnay combined the ripe, forward Nuits-Blanches with the elegantly structured “Le Bouge d’a Côte,” creating a more open style than the traditional ABCs, complex but balanced, no exaggeration but less restraint and discretion. The XXth Anniversary at once became the most heralded white in ABC’s long history.
Five years on we have the outstanding 2005 vintage. For his XXVth Anniversary, Jim has again has made a wine worthy of celebration – a chardonnay that is youthful, powerful, multi-dimensional – yet one that possesses the structured to gain complexity through bottle development. Fully ripened grapes (but not overly so), 100% new oak (not 200%), 20 months in barrel, unfiltered… you get the picture.
“Nuits-Blanches au Bouge” is the synthesis of the opposing ideas of Chardonnay creation bedeviling Jim Clendenen; the 2005 XXVth Anniversary has been sorted out in the most appealing, delicious, complete and satisfying way he can imagine it.
